Bipolar is one of the most common and persistent mental illnesses, characterised by periods of extreme high and low moods. More specifically, the lows can be deep, prolonged, and profound depression that alternate with periods of excessively elevated or irritable mood, called mania.
The highs may include symptoms such as sleeplessness, reckless behaviour, grandiosity, and severe thought disturbances, which may or may not include psychosis.
Between these highs and lows, patients may have periods of high creativity and functionality, which if used productively and can lead to a successful life. It is possible to manage Bipolar disorder, but it usually presents a lifelong struggle and challenge. Interestingly, some people with bipolar mentioned that they wouldn't have it any other way.
