Pauline Ferguson
Pauline started Red Fox Building Biology to help people remove pollutants from their immediate environment—their homes. Having grown up on an orchard near Stanthorpe, where clean air, water and fresh food was always available, moving to the city was a big culture shock. “I don’t think I drank water from the tap for years—it just tasted awful, and the fruit and veggies you get from the supermarket were completely tasteless after the ones you pick yourself. Let’s not even mention the air.”
Water can be filtered, and growers markets supply good food and pay the actual grower, but how do you make the air healthier? “Too many people have asthma these days. Did you know that one in four kids have asthma these days? That’s not good. When I was at school it was maybe one person in high school. Maybe two, in four or five hundred. Not one in four. We need to lower those numbers.”
Growing up in a regional area also made Pauline more aware that businesses need to be able to cover more of Queensland than just the major city areas. “I’m happy to travel all over Queensland—my definition of south east Queensland is out to about Dalby in the west, Wide Bay-Burnett area in the north, and south to the border. Outside of that we might need to look at travel time and logistics, but all of that area is covered in our standard pricing.
“So, really, we cover all of Queensland, and we’re happy to look into the Northern Territory too if there are sick people who need help.”
Pauline says she’s recovering from depression and has had some nasty brushes with pneumonia and ‘flu. “It’s bad enough dealing with the "Black Dog” without your environment contributing and making it worse. If you’re breathing good air, your body can more easily deal with all sorts of things, including depression and colds and ‘flu. Even pneumonia can be beaten if you’re breathing good air.”
