HOW TO CHOOSE A NATUROPATH AND HOW TO BE A GOOD PATIENT/CLIENT

One of the interesting things about having an email address and a phone number on line is that it broadens the number of people I talk to well beyond the people I see at work. Over the last few years I have developed some opinions about the above questions based on the numerous people who talk to me.

I’m aware of course that I am about to offend some people   It’s given that I will if I’m honest.
If you are offended put it down to my bias.  We all have some and I’m no different.

PICKING A NATURAL THERAPIST

If you come away from your naturopath’s consultation with a giant bag full of more bottles of pills and potions than you can count;  run don’t walk to another practitioner.  There is a limit to the number of supplements anybody can or will take.  A good practitioner will start with the basics – what is most likely to help.  Your prescription can always be changed.

If he or she insists that only pills purchased from them are of any value – again run.  This is simply not true.  Practitioner standard supplements in many (not all) cases can be purchased from a health shop or a pharmacy.  This doesn’t apply to herbs – (Chinese or Western) that are mixed just for you.

If your practitioner mixes herbs for you they should be willing to tell you what is in the bottle and why!

If you have to pay a hefty extra sum for diagnostic procedures – be careful.  Maybe an expensive test will help - but it’s usually not necessary at the first or second visit.

This brings me to appointments.  Personally, I seldom make follow up appointments unless I’m asked.  If the patient is happy they will phone me for a second appointment.  I shouldn’t have to push. And I don’t like to.

If your practitioner gives you a list of foods not to touch as long as your arm and wants you to fast on blueberry juice for five days – run don’t walk – how silly- nobody is going to do all that.

If you are rushed through and fobbed off to someone else for a “treatment” think about the standard of service you are paying for and if you are getting it.

If your practitioner gives you pills and potions but doesn’t talk about diet or exercise or lifestyle – don’t we all wish! again – you know what to do.

If you are bamboozled by words you don’t understand and which aren’t explained – if you are threatened with dire consequences if you don’t  take this or that pill – Is that what you came for- to be scared silly?

Notice I haven’t even mentioned Associations or qualifications.  Of course we want our practitioners to be qualified but I personally rate sincerity and ethics above membership of an association

NOW TO THE PATIENT.

If you want a pill to fix everything and are not prepared to make any changes – GPs have more patience with this than natural health practitioners.  After all they spend 7 minutes with you.  We give up an hour –for less money too.

Take any test results with you especially any relating to your condition and that are from the last year or two.

Be prepared to be honest.  If I ate what my patiens tell me they eat in a day I would look like a scarecrow.  Licks, tastes, nibbles, and drinks COUNT.

Be prepared to at least start making a few health changes.

Working hard at work is NOT exercise.  A 20 minute walk is.

Sometimes we don’t have the answer – accept this.  Unless you have really BAD genes most people can feel better if they make a few changes.  We can help you feel better but we can’t really make a 60 year old feel 20 again – sorry – try to be realistic.  The advertisements you see on television have nothing to do with reality.  That’s why they are ads.

I have said elsewhere on this site about the value of meditation to health.  Yet still I get resistance.  Find a group (it doesn’t have to be mine) go and learn and practice.  Learn to spend more of your life in the moment.  Breathing in the scent of freshly washed laundry and experiencing it with all your being is a meditation.  Nice – even so  find a group and LEARN and then PRACTICE.
