Karma, what is that really?

Next Article >

Karma is an Indian word literally meaning ‘action’. The word action has no positive or negative meaning in itself, so karma takes on its meaning or quality by the type of action imparted to it. In this philosophy there is a belief in reincarnation. The idea is that the soul comes into earthly existence to experience earthly situations of all kinds. The soul drops from Heaven, Nirvana, Universal Energy or what ever your belief system is and descends into a state called Maya or illusion, where it quickly forgets its heavenly source. The purpose of the earthly experience is to come to know oneself as part of creative energy, return to the source or life force consciously through the process of wisdom gained from experiences of many lives. This results in a gradual unveiling of illusion to eventual enlightenment. This may take hundreds or thousands of lives to complete for those who eventually find the way to their pure essence of divine love.

You however remain creative, but often you are not aware of your power. You are powerful in your own right within a universe full of creative energy and are continually creating through your thoughts, words and actions, your reality. If you believe the world is a scary place where you can trust no one, then that is what you attract to you and that becomes your life experience. If you believe that life is bountiful and abundant then this will also be your experience. In essence what you put out returns to you, ‘what goes around comes around’, either in this or future lives. So you create karma of all kinds constantly and meet your karma coming back to you from present or past lives, in the people, events and situations you find yourself in.

In addition we each come from the same source Universal Energy. Between lives we review our experiences and spiritual progress and decide what it is we need to experience in our next life. What we didn’t do well or didn’t ‘get’ are those experiences that will need to be re experienced. It seems that the soul in deciding, is not interested in how painful or difficult such choices might become in the physical world. We decide which family, culture, siblings, relationships and other events and experiences we need to have, so as to add to our wisdom, help us change our beliefs and patterns and take responsibility for ourselves in the truest sense. Therefore how we treat others and our environment is important too, as we are actually ‘all one’ in the deeper sense.

Look at your life now and notice, which areas are flowing well or are incomplete, difficult or painful. The areas that are flowing well are those that you have mastered, however the more challenging areas are those that you need to focus on to find the underlying beliefs, unresolved emotions or choices that you are making, in order to create better karma for the present and future. In addition you need to be aware that you can only make changes in yourself and do not have the power or the right to attempt to change others, as each human journey is sacred.

So your experience of life is complex. You are living your present of many lives. You are creating karma by each of your decisions and you are also experiencing the results of past decisions as well. In addition you have chosen your present life situation, in terms of birth, personality, gifts and challenges. Your soul chose the timing in which you were to enter life with the parents of your choice, so that you can have the experience that is right for your further growth. From a Vedic astrology perspective your chart represents the collective karma that you are entering your life with. This will unfold throughout your life, however you also have free will tin how you deal with it. In this way you can change your karma and create new patterns. So your task is to deal with each situation or person in your life in the best way possible, considering your own and others best interests, while also taking responsibility to create more consciously what you want in your life. Fortunately as your soul matures, you are more easily able to take full responsibility for yourself and your circumstances and stop blaming others or bad luck for your situation. At some level you have created the present. Once you really understand that you can begin making the most of each situation, dealing with karma to the best of your ability you can create a better life for yourself as you return to the source.
