MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS
As a naturopath and herbalist what is the single most effective therapy I can use? Would you believe mindfulness meditation? So many people I see sit down in my office and begin to tell me their symptoms. They’ve researched the net. They’ve been to doctors. (Several usually) They have tried supplements- nothing has worked- so now I get my go at fixing the so far unfixable! Does this sound even a little bit like you? Their speech is rapid, they fidget with their hands. Then they tell me they are not stressed. Ok maybe this person doesn’t FEEL stressed. Could be! But they do need to slow down and begin to notice the seasons in the year and in their lives. Could this be you too? Sometimes- a person used to come along to my Thursday evening meditation session for a go or two at mindfulness. Then of course when after two or three times enjoying a social chit chat and making a failed attempt at home; and the physical problem still persisting- that person didn't come back. This happened so often I stopped these classes and now sign people up for three or more individual sessions. This has been amazingly succesful. Mindfulness meditation DOES work. In fact its effects are profound. Possibly more profound than giving away junk food in favour of organic produce; or climbing off the couch and into the fresh air. It takes time though. Try for six sessions and a follow up once a month. Practice every day. It is the most important thing you can do. Learn how to break up your day with dozens of one to five minute meditations. Learn to stop for a moment as you change your daily tasks. Learn to watch your thoughts – understand they are only thoughts. If they are not helping you – not improving your life -you can discover how to change them. If you keep meditating and practice some simple mental exercises - one day you will realise you’ve changed. Your symptoms are gone or are considerably less. If you have a chronic condition you will find not only will you feel much better but your relationship with any remaining pain or ill health will change for the better. No longer agitated and stressed - you have discovered peace and acceptance – even joy. I don’t think I’m allowed to claim that meditation can cure cancer- so I won’t say that. But it can cure lives.
The most common question I’m asked is this “Is it religious?” Well no. I don’t have a religious barrow to push. I have taught people of all religions and with no religion at all. Meditation is a spiritual practice in that you learn to appreciate and be thankful. Many people feel closer to their God when they meditate. Other people simply make friends with themselves. Spiritual growth is a personal and often private thing. I never intrude. If you are looking for God you may well find Him or Her. If you are looking for Peace you will find Peace. If you simply want a better more fulfilling healthy life you’ll find that. It depends completely on what YOU want. I’m not sure why people resist something so inexpensive easy and fun. Sure it requires a bit of discipline at first to establish a habit, but meditation has been the path to wisdom and peace for thousands of years. It still is and I love being able to hand people their key. Not convinced. Watch a child exploring and discovering. Listen to them giggle. Give me a ring 0400979868 or 97986862 and give mindful meditation a chance. Book three hour long sessions. One day you will say it is the best money you ever spent..
