HBOT In The Management Of Autism

In 2009 Dr Daniel Rossignol published in BMC Pediatrics, a multi centred, randomised, double blind, controlled trial looking at the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on children with Autism.

The children's ages ranged from two years of age to seven years.

There were 62 children in the trial.

 

There was a treatment group, randomly selected, who were exposed to:

- 1.3 ATA

- 24% 02

For forty sessions.

 

VERSUS the control group who received

- 1.03 ATA  (normal pressure)

- 21% 02

 

The following measurement scales relevant for this diagnosis were used.

CGI- Clinical Global Impression

ABC- Aberant Behaviour Checklist

ATEC- Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist

 

The group receiving 24% oxygen in the pressured environment of 1.3 ATA showed significant improvements in overall functioning, namely

receptive language

social skills

eye contact

sensory cognitive awareness
