Bowen Therapy for Migraine Headaches

Bowen Therapy is a gentle bodywork technique that help the body to heal itself...

If you have ever had a massage or osteopathy treatment, you would know how powerful touch can be on the body as well as specific manipulations on areas of the body to align structural imbalances.

This is what Bowen Therapy aims to do and why it is so popular around the world. Bowen therapy uses very gentle rolling movements across the fibres of the connective tissue that covers your muscles. This bowen 'move' initiates muscle release as well as affecting the nervous system and creating a chain responses in your body to essentially re-align itself.

A migraine may come about due to a variety of factors, most typically a misalignment in the cervical spine and/or pelvic area. The best part is that Bowen therapy, with its gentle moves can guide the body to begin to shift and respond the way it knows itself. There is no force - just guidance. Once these rolling movements are performed by the therapist, the 2-3 minute pauses are then uses for the body to integrate the information for change.

In my experience with migraine sufferers, by the end of the session there is considerable relief with minimal interference. Unlike traditional massage where the effects are felt at that time on the massage table, with Bowen therapy, as the body is still responding, change continues to take place well after the practice. Usuall this is between 2 and 5 days.

Stress is a large part of many illnesses and most notably for migraine sufferers. Allowing a whole hour to be fully present and receive such a powerful and meditative treatment addresses the persons whole state of being. Patients realise after a Bowen therapy session how much mental and emotional stress they are holding in their body. This is noticed because of the gentle, minimalist and meditative aspect of a Bowen Therapy treatment.

Bowen therapy is often used in conjuction with the following natural therapies:

  • Kinesiology
  • Acupuncture
  • Reiki
  • Physiotherapy

and ofcourse nutritional changes, exercise changes and mental stress changes.
