Your eco-friendly Baby Nursery

From the moment your baby enters the world, you will be thinking of their health and safety. This usually means cots, nappy changing and other equipment needed to care for your baby. But there are some more obvious issues you need to consider first.

Painting the nursery is one of the highlights of parenting preparation. While you’re dreaming of animal murals or retro designs, you may want to think more carefully aobut the paint before the design, does it have low levels of volatile organic compounds. Some VOCs are extremely toxic, so caution is advised from the outset.

Expectant parents should only use VOC-free formulas, they are readily accessible and affordable these days.

Next to consider is the floor. Carpet may seems soft but be careful of synthetic material that  often contain  petrochemicals. There are a variety of hazards that can be introduced in your baby’s space via the carpet. The backing, adhesives, carpet fibers and dyes can contain VOCs and other toxic materials.

All carpets and paints should be installed well before your baby arrives, be sure to open windows to vent fumes, and then leave the door to the room closed for at least three days.

Pregant mums, you can get involved in the design but you may have guessed by now its best you are not doing the painting yourself! Get help. Stay out of the room so you do not inhale.

Your child will spend many hours in his or her nursery. Making it a safe and comforting space will help you and your baby sleep easy.
