Can you change your bad habits?
If you have ever tried to change bad habits or break bad habits you will know the answer is Yes. But before you can change your bad habits, you need to recognise one thing; that you had bad habits in the first place!
How did you develop the bad habit? Habitual behaviour comes from repating an activity or action on a regular basis so that it comes natrally automatically to you.
Once you have acknowledged the bad habits you want to change, you can begin the process of changin a bad habit for a postive one.
So, it stand to reason that changing a bad habit involves:
- Knowing what the bad habits are.
- Affirming "I need to change my bad habits"
- Being ready and willing to stop reating the behaviour that created the bad habits in the first place.
The human brain is a complex organ that allows us to feel, think, see, hear, move, taste and smell. It receives information through our senses, analyses and stores information (memories). The brain is simply the master control centre for the entire body and is the starting point for all habits. The brain is the organ inside our skull, but the mind the processor. When we talk about our mind, we are usually referring to our conscious mind, but here is the problem, the conscious mind can only process approximately forty bits of data per second compared to the unconscious mind which can process FORTY MILLION bits of data in the same second! Therefore, we can easily deduce that the unconscious mind is one million times a more powerful ‘processor’ than the conscious mind! Now, imagine we want to change a habit e.g. overeating, smoking, nail biting even procrastination and we use a combination of pure willpower and positive thinking, in effect, we are using a very tiny processor to actually achieve change.
As much as we may want and desire this change, because it doesn’t happen easily or quickly, we can have a tendency to say “I just can’t lose weight and keep it off’ or ‘I run out of time’ or ‘I can’t stop biting my nails’ or ‘I can’t keep a boyfriend’ and we take on the role of a victim and see ourselves as a failure.
Is it any wonder that people struggle with changing bad habits, when they are only using 1 to 5% of their actual brain power!
