Biodynamic Massage

Article by Donald Marmara

Biodynamic Massage may be especially helpful in cases of trauma, stress, digestive problems, back pain, headaches, and other stress-related problems.

It may also be a useful adjunct to counselling and psychotherapy, and some other therapeutic modalities.

Biodynamic Massage is more than a set of techniques. It is a specific way of relating through touch.

Biodynamic massage aims to find the quality of touch that a person needs in order to feel safe at that particular time. This is done by observing the clients’ bodily responses to the practitioner’s touch.

Changes in breathing, skin colour, muscle tone, facial expression, small twitching movements, and the sounds of the digestive tract are some of the  indicators that guide the  Biodynamic Massage practitioner.

The aim of Biodynamic Massage is to enable clients to feel safe enough to let go of bodily tensions that form part of their defences against experiencing life more fully.

As emotional memories may surface as a result of Biodynamic Massage, this kind of bodywork should only be practiced by a fully trained and experienced somatic psychotherapist.

Biodynamic Massage is not a cure nor is it intended as a substitute for clinical or medical attention where this is required.

History and Training

Biodynamic Massage was developed by Gerda Boyesen, a Norwegian Physiotherapist and Clinical Psychologist. Gerda moved to London in 1968, where she set up The Centre for Bio Energy to train therapists.

Donald Marmara trained in Biodynamic Massage over a four year period with Gerda Boyesen and has thirty years experience. In his work with clients, he combines principles of Biodynamic Massage, if and as appropriate, with his other training and experience to provide the most effective ways of guiding his clients to achieve and maintain optimal health & wellbeing.
