Are your Essential Oils toxic?

While many people are becoming increasingly aware of the harmful chemicals used in Personal Care products, there is often less awareness about what is going on in the Essential Oil industry. These beautiful oils, often considered to have wonderful healing benefits, can be chocked full of surprises.

Essential Oils have been used since ancient times for healing, wellbeing, sacred rituals, embalming and more. Yet they too have succumbed to the marketing hype that permeates our society leaving the consumer with inferior products while big-business greedily pockets our money.

Today, 98% of our essential oils are what is known as ‘perfume-grade’ and the regulatory standards are very poor. An essential oil labelled 100% pure often contains less than 10% of the actual pure oil, along with chemical fillers and synthetic components making up the remaining percentage. Many of these essential oil companies use inferior plant stock or different species that are then distilled too quickly using harmful chemicals and with no respect for the integrity of the delicate components within the oils.

So how do you tell if you are using a pure, unadulterated, organic, therapeutic-grade essential oil?

Firstly, you read the label. If it says that the oil cannot be ingested, then it is mostly likely not a pure therapeutic-grade oil.

Next, you research the company. Do they have a full disclosure policy? Do they grow their own plants, distil their own oils and test their own oils as well as using independent laboratories? Will they allow you to visit their farms, distilleries and laboratories should you wish to? Will they share the results of their testing with you? Do they guarantee the quality of their oils?

Then you use your own wisdom and knowingness. Test one of the oils, inhale it, feel the energy of it. Essential Oils have their own frequency and life-force and when they are grown and distilled properly you will be able to feel/sense the difference.

Here’s an interesting fact:

There is TWICE as much Lavender Oil sold by ONE particular US company than what is grown throughout the whole world! How can this be? Because instead of using what we refer to as “true” lavender, or Lavandula angustifolia, it is substituted with a sterile hybrid known as Lavendin or Lavandula x intermedia. Yes, the Lavendin is another species of Lavender, however, the analogy used to describe the difference between the two is that of the relationship between a horse (angustifolia) and a mule (Lavendin).

While there are numerous differences between the plants, one of the key factors to consider is that Lavender is often used to heal burns, scars, wounds, bruises and various skin problems etc, and Lavendin typically contains about 7% of camphor, which as you may know is FLAMMABLE and may therefore exacerbate skin problems and even cause the skin to burn. And of course, it’s cheaper than Lavender which is why it is so widely used.

Research wisely and thoroughly when you choose essential oils because the skin is the largest organ your body has and what you put onto it is absorbed straight into the blood stream. The inhalation of essential oils sends oxygen to the limbic region of the brain and adulteration by chemicals can cause detrimental results.

Essential Oils do have the most amazing healing capabilities if you use the highest quality. I wish you all the best in your journey of discovering them.
