Realising The Potential of Natural Ingredients

The demand for natural products is on the rise.

Boasting highly beneficial ingredients that are well known to provide nutritional benefit to the skin, having unique and effective properties, brands deliver popular anti-aging products to boost skin-vitality and to meet other cosmetic needs. Evolving science is realising the potential of natural ingredients to address cosmetic and health related concerns. But, the importance of building a sound and reliable supply chain is a valuable lesson that every brand must learn.

How do manufacturers develop and maintain a resilient and secure supply chain while under increased scrutiny from consumers, retailers and regulatory bodies? Brands that seek to produce 100% natural and toxic-free products need to be prepared to address the challenges associated with an evolving market. Brands must consider the use of natural ingredients and be prepared to tackle sourcing and supply chain considerations related to consumer demands. Developing an effective marketing strategy for natural ingredients and addressing issues such as ensuring ingredient quality control and transparency is essential.

"A supply chain is a system of organisations, people, activities, information and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to customer. Supply chain activities involve the transformation of natural resources, raw materials and components into a finished product that is delivered to the end customer."

Addressing skin complaints in any formulation is quite a challenge in itself.

The formulation not only needs to contain active ingredients, it needs to be stabilised in a base that provides a high quality product with a good shelf-life, and further meets the specific requirements in terms of ingredient agreeability and rational of the brands objectives and design. Specific attention should be directed to ingredients where the clinical data supports the expected skin benefits and therapeutic claims must be substantiated by industry regulatory bodies. Each and every word placed onto a given product is scrutinised by the manufacturer. A simple word such as “Soothing” means calming yes? But when the word is referred to the skin, it normally indicates that the product will be providing relief from a skin discomfort of various origins. Brands must therefore ensure that they do not make a therapeutic claim unintentionally or without authorisation by regulatory bodies.

“The botanical kingdom is a rich source of biologically active compounds endowed with soothing properties. Several botanical active ingredients have in fact been reported effective in addressing, by various mechanisms of action, the physiological functions our organism uses to maintain a healthy status and skin appearance and counteract skin discomfort. The challenges eventually occurring on the skin may be managed by several soothing actives that modulate the inflammation response.” - Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications.

The brands that Safe Cosmetics Australia promotes via our Toxic-Free List produce the highest quality natural products available on the market.

Each brand addresses skin challenges from a unique perspective, utilizing natural ingredients sourced locally and internationally with many choosing local ingredients where possible. Australia is known for its pristine coastlines and vast countryside, well positioned in an ideal climate for producing toxic-free products, Australian’s are spoilt for choice.

We can thank our many brands for their pioneering perspective.

Committed to formulating products from nature’s raw ingredients, our Toxic-Free brands exclude hazardous industrial chemicals from their product formulations. Understanding the nutritional benefits of natural ingredients over their synthetic competitors, natural cosmetic companies work hard to convince consumers that the benefits of using natural products are healthier than mainstream synthetic varieties. This issue is a challenge as consumers are not educated on cosmetic law and the permitted use of industrial chemicals that can be found in everyday products. Many consumers purchase products without understanding the potential health risks associated with using synthetic chemicals to nourish their body.

You know that eating a healthy and natural diet of raw food is the only way to look after your body. So why is it difficult to get the message across to use natural ingredients to care for your skin? You wouldn’t knowingly drink industrial chemicals so why would you apply hazardous chemicals to your face and body? Many of the issues natural cosmetics face stem from the lack of regulation in Australia and the trusting nature of Australian's that assume all products have met strict regulation criteria. This is not the case. There is no specific regulatory body for producing cosmetic and personal care products in Australia. Yes, suppliers are required to meet labelling laws and to use only chemicals that are approved by NICNAS - the National Industrial Chemicals and Notification Assessment Scheme, but that is it as far as regulation proceeds. There is no requirement to have products lab-tested prior to sale and manufacturers are permitted to use known carcinogenic chemicals in their formulations.

If you are interested in finding products that are made from natural sourced ingredients over synthetic varieties, then visit our Toxic-Free List to find certified toxic-free products now. "By avoiding these harmful ingredients found in regular skincare products you will help decrease your chances of redness, irritation and breakouts, along with sever allergic reactions. In addition, you are putting fewer toxic chemicals into the environment and water, contributing to a safer and cleaner environment. Artificial fragrances in many products often tend to cause headaches and sensitivity, while parabens can alter the function of the endocrine system in your body." - TotalBeauty.com
