Did you know that Vitamin A is the only ingredient proven to correct and normalise epidermal DNA damage?

It reverses UVA and UVB damage. Wow, this is amazing.

Our skin cells are damaged from exposure to UVA and UVB rays.  If your cell DNA is damaged, this means as the cells divide, the damaged DNA is copied and reproduced so the skin is continuously impaired.

Exposure to UV light from the sun accounts for 90% of the symptoms of early ageing, repeated exposure causes epidermal DNA damage such as changes in texture, wrinkling, discoloration, broken capillaries, pigmentation, age spots, skin bumps and skin cancers. 

However once DNA damage is corrected with Vitamin A, the damaged cells are pushed to the surface of the skin to slough off, and new healthy cells that have been corrected are ready and waiting to come to the surface for healthy new skin. The structure of the skin can be changed with Vitamin A, it corrects DNA damage, increases collagen production and  regulates oil flow, making it a number one treatment for Ageing, Acne, Oily or Sun damaged skins.

All cells have Vitamin A receptors, which allow Vitamin A into the cells where it is needed to correct DNA Damage.

The form of Vitamin A that corrects DNA in the cells is called Retinoic Acid.

There are many types of Vitamin A ingredients that you will see listed in skin care. Retinol, Retinol Palmitate, – they all convert into Retinoic Acid once inside the skin- the difference in products  is the potency and the delivery systems:

In a cosmetic cream the Retinol or Vitamin A will be swimming in an emulsion of oil and water on the surface of the skin and won’t have the same effect as a Cosmeceutical or Cosmedical product which can deliver the Vitamin A into the cell.

Retinoic Acid also comes in the form of a topical concentrated cream  only prescribed by a Doctor, usually in the cases of an acne skin. These creams are already in the form of Retinoic Acid.  You might be thinking the stronger the better- but the down side to topical retinoic acid is that it irritates the skin barrier. The skin’s protective function is compromised and the skin is stripped which contradicts the benefit of Vitamin A to correct cell function.

When treating the skin for acne, care needs to be taken to avoid weakening and stripping the skin.

The benefit of having a Retinol ingredient delivered via an encapsulated delivery system in professional skin care, is that you avoid damaging the protective barrier of the skin,  the retinol forms into Retinoic Acid once it has been delivered inside the skin for the DNA correction to take place.

How to use Vitamin A?

Its best to add Vitamin A into your skin care routine under the advice of a skin care professional, gradually and gently, using at night time perhaps just one or two nights in the first week and gradually increase with time. The Vitamin A increases cell turnover, so the skin may start to feel dry, with a bit of redness or some break outs, as the old damaged cells are pushed to the surface and the skin regenerates itself.

Some warmth and tingling is also sometimes experienced as the Vitamin A cell receptors are ‘awakened’ and DNA correction is underway. This is called a normal retinoid response, and your skin care professional can guide you through it,  if it is experienced it is usually from the initial time of starting up until 2-4 weeks, though this varies for everyone depending on the genetic predispositions of your skin. It is also beneficial to use a Vitamin C product of a morning to maximise the prevention of DNA damage, and of course a 30+ Sun Protection every day is an absolute must.

So how does Retinol actually work in the skin?

Once absorbed into the skin, Retinoic Acid is produced, which increases the expression of a p53 protein. P53 is a kep protein for cellular repair. Upon DNA damage, the p53 is activated which causes the protein to communicate with target genes that are involved in DNA repair.  When it is said that Retinol as a skin care ingredient increases cell turnover, this is because it activates the genetic processors to make the cell turnover happen.*

Safety: Vitamin A is involved in the cell division process in the development of babies, too much Vitamin A is a known contribution to birth defects. For this reason it is advised pregnant women do not use Vitamin A in their skin care during this time, in case the Vitamin A crosses the placenta to the baby.
