Emotions and Health

Emotions do affect the Internal Organs
BOYF (Back on Your Feet) - News Letter

At some stage in your life you may have been upset and as a result lost your appetite. Chinese Medicine explains this as the "Liver attacking Spleen and Stomach". This is the reason you have been told not to talk about money or any other touchy subject at the dinner table.

How this happens is the Liver is the one organ amongst all the others that really gets stirred up by stress. Once stressed the liver becomes hot and because the blood passes through the liver for cleansing the blood also gets hot. Heat rises and expands and this is why you see angry people have a red head and red ears (this is where the term "hot headed" comes from). Anyway when the Liver gets hot it attacks the Stomach and Spleen. The Stomach and Spleen are responsible for digestion but the stomach especially cannot function properly if it becomes too hot. Symptoms resulting from a hot Stomach can be reflux, indigestion, nightmares, constipation plus many more.

Each organ has an associated emotion and it goes as follows.

  • Spleen & Stomach (worry, pensiveness)

  • Liver & Gall Bladder (anger, frustration)

  • Lungs & Large Intestine (sadness, suppressed grief)

  • Kidneys & Bladder (fear, shock)

  • Heart & Small intestine (excess excitement "joy")

Excess of any of the above emotions will weaken the associated organs and affect the body in total. Are you now thinking how will it affect the body?

Well, for example the Liver looks after your eyes, muscles and tendons, finger nails and aspects of the throat. It also controls the menstrual cycle and plays a major role in the reproductive process.

For women keeping the liver calm means the difference between pain and painless menstrual cycles, miscarriages, fertility and mood swings. For guys especially the sporty type, a calm liver will prevent torn muscles, injured back, tinnitus and headaches.

So when you keep emotions under control you are actually looking after the body in total.

Below is a list of what each organ looks after.

Spleen: production of blood, body flesh, lips, holds all organs in place, holds blood in vessels, distributes fluids throughout the body and aids in nutrient intake.

Lungs: nose, breathing, skin, body hair, opening and closing of pores

Kidneys: brain, bones, cartilage, spinal cord, ears, teeth, head hair, reproduction (sex drive) and water metabolism.

Heart: tongue, circulation of blood, complexion and controls sweat.

How do you keep emotions under control?

Don't be attached!

This means, if something is not going the way you planned don't take it to heart and instead of trying to hold on to the problem and asking why has it happened look at the problem, learn the lesson and either fix it or try something different.

Sitting and sulking about the situation is a waist of time, it damages your organs and it helps no one.

Become "solution focused". Make this your motto, "I am solution focused".

Until next time, take care and look after your organs.
