BOWEN THERAPY – The Gentle Remedy

To me Bowen Therapy is not just about the physiology, but also includes the spiritual and energetic fields as well. It is also extremely important for the practitioner to not only just know intellectually the correct series of moves for each particular treatment, but to also maintain a clear and untainted intent towards the integrity of each client’s return to harmony and balance within the body.
In these increasingly harsh days of pushing & pulling, pill popping and applications of pressures, I am constantly discovering that the use of such a gentle, non-obtrusive and subtle therapy on those too many aches and pains, injuries and complaints is a beautiful balm to sooth the soul.
Thomas Ambrose Bowen was the originator of this particular technique back in the late 1950’s, and although Bowen Therapy is well recognised bymanyt, it continues to remain quite a mystery to the bulk of the population at large!
Tom had a favourite saying by which he lived his life, and it portrays, I believe, the integrity of the man and his intentions whilst working his “magic” on his clients:
“I expect to pass through this world but once, any good thing therefore that I do,
or any kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature, let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall never pass this way again.”
With the dubious intent to attempt to reduce some of the mystery of Bowen, let me affirm that massage is not involved, nor is there any muscle twisting or bone manoeuvring, and even the pet world through CCMRT (Cat & Canine Muscle Release Therapy) and EMRT (Equine Muscle Release Therapy) may be benefitted by this treatment.
Through a series of gentle rolling movements of the practitioner’s thumbs and fingers connecting with the client’s soft tissue, muscles, ligaments and organs, ‘messages’ are transmitted throughout the body influencing it to commence its own healing sequences and encouraging the body to realign itself.
This is to assist the body’s natural ability to realign, repair and co-ordinate its own healing, bringing it back to balance and harmony. This is the essence of what Bowen Therapy treatments are about.
There are no harsh movements, manipulations or adjustments, and the person undergoing the treatment is encouraged to venture into a state of relaxation, tranquillity and peace.
There are many ailments that can and are treated quite successfully by Bowen, and some of these examples are as follows :
Migraine, Carpel Tunnel, Tennis Elbow, Asthma, Sciatica, Scoliosis, Neck & Shoulder pain, Back pain, Pelvic imbalances, Sports injuries and so on.
